Remember Charles Schulz

Honoring Charles Schulz - loved this point of view about motivating children to read! (Schulz was born November 26, 2022 - Died February 12, 2000)
And still today, his creation of the Peanuts Gang continues to entertain and inspire the young and the young at heart.

A heartfelt Charles Schulz tribute: Echo published in the San Antonio Express-News

Reading the Saturday comics was truly a delight.

Probably 99 percent of the comics paid tribute to Charles Schulz’s 100th birthday.

Their homage to “Sparky” brought tears to my eyes. I have been a devoted fan of “Peanuts” all my life. I cherish Schulz’s gentle and heartfelt depictions of the “Peanuts” world and the children who populated it.

My son was initially a slow reader, so we got all of the Charlie Brown books from the library that we could, to encourage him.
Even cantankerous Lucy teaches about tolerance!

Since we lived in Minnesota, at the time, where Schulz is from, there was no shortage! It worked, and he became an avid reader with a love for the written word.

With all the standard news to wade through, these tribute comics were golden and much appreciated.

Maine Writer note:  Growing up in Baltimore, my father believed in the power of the comics to motivate reading.
Our family subscribed to The Baltimore News American (aka "The News Post"). Every Sunday, the full color comic pages were spread out on the floor in our Dundalk, Maryland row home. As kids, we crawled from one page to another to read the words in the clouds around all the famous comic characters. We learned about pop culture and personal heroism by learning to read our favorite comic strips. Charles Shultz, through his gentle characters in the Peanuts cartoons, taught us to like one another, even if some people are not as likeable as others. Even Lucy teaches us about the importance of being tolerant.

The Baltimore News-American was a broadsheet newspaper published in downtown Baltimore, Maryland until May 27, 1986.

The newspaper had a continuous lineage of more than 200 years. For much of the mid-20th century, it had the largest circulation in the city.
